Engraving of the Eddystone lighthouse built by Smeaton in 1759 and the foundations of the new lighthouse, designed by Sir James Douglass. The Smeaton lighthouse was being replaced as its foundations had been eroded. Once the new Douglass lighthouse was complete, the Smeaton lighthouse was taken down and rebuilt on the Plymouth Hoe.
