Largest Post-War Liner Launched - The liner Orcades after being launched by Lady Mors-head, goes down the slipways into the water at Barrow-in-Furness today. The 31,000-ton liner Orcades, Built for the Orient line by Vickers-Arm-sarong Limited, and which is the biggest merchant ship to be launched in any country since the end of the war, successfully went down the slip-ways at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs., today (Tuesday). The Launching ceremony was performed by Lady Morshead, wife of Lieut-Gen. Sir Leslie Morshead, manager of the Orient Line. The Orcades is intended for the Australian run, and will carry 1,500 passengers with cargo and mail. With a speed of 22 and a half knots the ship will cut the pre-war service schedule between England and Melbourne from 56 days. The largest passenger liner yet built at Barrow, the Orcades is estimated to cost $3,000,000 and is of an entirely new design. October 14, 1947.
