Navy's Anti-Sub Hoverplanes -- Helicopters of Number 845 squadron - the Royal Navy's first anti-submarine helicopter squadron - flying over shipping in the Solent today. The Squadron went into operational service at Gosport yesterday. The America-built Sikorsky's 55's known in the Navy as Whirlwinds, are similar to these now with the Navy in Malaya. Their anti-submarine equipment includes "dipping asdic". The squadron is expected to be based at Malta in the early summer. The helicopters are powered by Wright Cyclone engines. Eventually it is intended to replace the $55 by the twin engined helicopter Bristol 173. March 16, 1954. (Photo by Herbert Ludford, United Press Photo).
