Weaving Material For New Barracks -- These Filipinos are ***** at a labor camp west of Pinamopoan, Leyte Island, in weaving material for a new thatch-roof barracks in the area. Palm fronds are being cleverly interlaced in the process, making a comparatively durable material through which air may circulate to improve living conditions in the humid climate. This matting normally covers only half the walls, the upper half being left open or screened in -- if there is any screening available. It is said that these structures, made wholly of vegetation from the jungles, will last native people for at least three years but stand up for white men only about 18 months against the onslaughts of heavy rains and wind and of fungi and wood-devouring insect life.
